We study the investment behavior of new domestic Chinese venture capital (VC) firms compared to foreign VC firms newly entering the Chinese market. Given the institutional and cultural differences, or psychic distance, between China and the home country of foreign VC‘s, the Uppsala Model would predict that foreign VC‘s will be more cautious initially than domestic Chinese VC‘s and that the degree of caution will increase with the psychic distance. We use country-of-origin, membership in GLOBE cultural clusters, and a broad measure of psychic distance based on institutional and cultural differences from Berry, et al. (2010) and the Freedom Index to test this prediction. Our data comes from Zero2IPO, which has a nearly exhaustive list of VC investments in China from 1989 through 2007 supplemented with data from VentureXpert. We find some support for the hypothesis that psychic distance affects initial investment behavior.

讲者简介：

Dr. Paul L. Hudson, Jr., also known as Link, earned his PhD in Business Administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, his MBA from The Ohio State University, and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia. His research interests include venture capital internationalization, Institutional Theory, Cross-Cultural Psychology, and collaborative and competitive behavior. He wrote his dissertation on venture capital internationalization in China in light of the Uppsala model and Liability of Foreignness concept from the field of International Business. Dr. Hudson has 10 years of experience in teaching and training. His work experience includes work in management and training at HSBC, in sales and customer service at a Time-Warner subsidiary, in ESL teaching and textbook editing in South Korea and Indonesia, in marketing at a VC-backed Internet technology firm, and as a small business owner in Hawaii. He has worked as a college lecturer both in the fields of ESL and Management.
